  • Introduction.

I am an award winning, qualified silversmith, jeweller and tutor. I design and handcraft timeless jewellery and silverware with integrity and longevity - to be worn, used, and adored.

My practice lies between art, utility and education, all rooted in a love of recycled precious metals and the heritage craft of silversmithing.

I have a passion for sharing my knowledge and a determination to keep the heritage craft of silversmithing alive.

    Materials.

While I work in all precious metals I’m particularly drawn to silver. It is such a lovely material to work with, naturally antibacterial, rigid yet malleable, an excellent heat conductor so warms with the heat of your hands. You learn its limits and work with it while learning its boundaries and becoming familiar with its qualities.

I often create sets, the triples, a pair of boxes, a series of pinchpots. It gives the pieces a sense of playfulness in juxtaposition to the rigidity of their form.

    Why I do it.

In a world of overconsumption and fast fashion, silversmithing allows me to be slow, methodical and considered. A connection with the past - the heritage craft of silversmithing- and knowing I am using the same techniques and processes as those who have created for thousands of years before me.

The calm of working with the trinity of head, heart and hand and being totally present in the moment.

    Influences and inspirations.

My designs are underpinned by the Modernist design theory of functionality, simplicity and a rejection of ornamentation and influenced by all things concrete, especially Brutalist architecture and 20th Century UK water towers. Timeless and minimal to suit your environment as you and it change over the years. My silverware is good at its utilitarian function while being pleasing to look at and enjoyable to use; longevity and value for money with buy right buy once. My work is created to be timeless in style and to last not just a lifetime but for generations.

    Where it began.

As a child I regularly visited antiques fairs with my aunt and uncle and was drawn to the craftsmanship of the jewellery, especially rings and brooches. They were so full of history, each one having its own story ready for me to imagine while the gold and silver always felt good to touch, gently warming with the heat from your hand.

During my teenage years I lived close to the UEA campus which was designed by Denys Lasdun. Spending a lot of time there (and later would go on to work, and study a Masters there), this could be where my love of bold lines and brutalist architecture developed.

Add in to the mix that my dad worked in construction, specifically with concrete, and it’s not hard to see where my visual language was born.

    My creative career history.

I was always creative and enjoyed various different mediums but when I started silversmithing and jewellery evening classes in my late 20s everything fell into place. This was the right craft for me.

I continued with these evening classes for a decade and at 38 I decided I wanted to pursue my passion for silversmithing as a career. I wasn’t sure how to go about this so applied to do a three year BA Hons degree in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery at the University for the Creative Arts. This is where my creativity turned from hobby to profession.

    The Present.

Since graduating I have gained an MA in Creative Entrepreneurship, attended masterclasses by some of the UKs leading silversmiths, won a Goldsmiths Craft and Design Council award, received an Arts Council England grant for Develop Your Creative Practice, and taught workshops across the UK. I strive to continuously improve my skills while splitting my time between designing and making, and sharing silversmithing with others through teaching.
